Introduction

This study is a result of three things.  Firstly an interest in St Augustine.  I discovered Augustine when studying Christian Spirituality at Ampleforth Abbey.  Secondly I teach I.C.T. and as a result spend a lot of time in front of a computer or surfing the net.  Thirdly a newspaper article about nuns in a convent who accept prayer requests over the internet.

Prayer

Prayer is central to any spirituality.  If you want to study what a spirituality believes, then look at how they believe it is possible to communicate with God.

The Internet

People always mistrust new technology.  What role does the internet play in intercessory prayer.  Ultimately it is a communication tool, and is little different from any distant request for prayer.  The anonymity of email may have benefits relating to a persons openness and honesty.  However there are some drawbacks.

Augustine

Many people consider Augustine to be the greatest Christian writer sine the new testament.  This is not without good reason.  Augustine was an intellectual.  His writings are also very realistic and human.

Monica

Monica, Augustine's mother, had prayed for Augustine's conversion for many years.  Most of this time was from a distance.  Yet we see that this intercessory pray was by no means ant less effective by being distant.

Conclusion

The full study considers whether intercessory prayer is even needed when God is all seeing, all hearing and all powerful.  Yet there is a great deal to be gained from it.  Distance does not need to be an obstacle, and can sometimes be an advantage.
